Some suitable women

This is a history of the Anglican Community of the Holy Name (CHN): its life and work within the context of the Diocesan Mission to the Streets and Lanes (MSL) in Melbourne from 1888 until 1997. The book presents the ministry of the MSL as an integral part of Melbournes early history of charitable and social welfare work and tells the story of a group of women who – for more than one hundred years – dedicated their lives to helping the poor and disadvantaged in the citys most deprived areas while concurrently establishing the foundations of the Religious Life for women within the Church of England in Australia.

Out and out

Out And Out has been written in response to the questions that Dave Andrews, the radical Christian community worker, has been asked again and again by Christian community workers all over the world. And the answers that he shares with us in this book have been forged and tested in the fire of his own personal, vocational and professional experience as a grass roots community worker. Out And Out is an attempt to explore what he calls Christian Mystic Community Work, that inspires, shapes and sustains the Waiters Union, an inner city community network, that he is a part of, which is way out in terms of its inclusiveness of up and outs and down and outs. The book covers the contribution of Initiatives Of Change and the Twelve Step Movement and concludes with a beautiful reflection by Daves wife, Ange, on the legacy of hospitality Dave and Ange have tried to pass on to their children and their childrens children.

Hard work never killed anybody

“Hard work never killed anybody” is a mantra repeated by everyone from prime ministers to workers, but this national belief contributes to injury and death in the workplace every day. In his ministry to bereaved families and injured workers John Bottomley has noted how the ideology of hard work has been exaggerated to the point of becoming an idolatry. This book confronts that idolatry with Bottomley’s long experience, personal stories, and the insights of scripture. Using Walter Brueggemann’s “prophetic imagination”, and the Australian indigenous experience of “deep listening”, the book offers an alternative vision of “companioning pastoral care”.

Senator Doug Cameron launched John Bottomley’s Hard Work Never Killed Anybody last week, and described the book thus:
“John is to be congratulated on raising and analysing some of the most complex issues arising from workplace deaths.”
“The issues raised in the book lay down a challenge to society in general about coming to grips with the impact of economic rationalism, the role of work and society, and the need for improved health and safety.”

Down under

Down Under has been written in response to the questions that Dave Andrews, the world-renowned Australian community worker, has been asked again and again by community workers all over the world. And the answers that he shares with us in this book have been forged and tested in the fire of his own personal, vocational and professional experience as a grass roots community worker. Down Under addresses the adverse effects of professionalisation and institutionalisation in community work and seeks to explore effective ways of resisting demands for compliance, holding the line and creating space for change. Down Under concludes with the wonderful example of Daves partner Anges in-depth, hands-on, face-to-face community work with refugees.

Crux

What was Jesus hoping to accomplish by laying down his life for his friends? And what has his death on the cross 2000 years ago got to do with us today? These are the questions CRUX answers, by re-examining the place of the story of the cross in the process of transformation. This book contends that the cross has the power to inspire a faith that can challenge the status quo and infuse our work for love and justice with infinite significance, and that the cross – and the unique critique, charisma, and catalyst it equips us with – is at the crux of any struggle for genuine personal, social, and political change.

Australians and the Christian God

“Explores what Australians have made of the question of God from 1788 to the present, acknowledging that like many in the Western world, Australians as a people have become less and less confident about the existence of God and increasingly vague about the kind of God they profess. It asks if this is a new phenomenon or if the seeds of such attitudes have been part of the Australian religious fabric from the beginning of European settlement. Dr Jackson’s book will be consulted widely because of the skill with which he traces the varying facets of Australias declining belief in God. His thorough research and clear argument will make it a standard work.” (Dr Ian Breward, University of Melbourne)

“Its robust argument and its intensity are compelling. Read it, learn from it, argue with it and be invigorated.” (David Hilliard, The Melbourne Anglican.)

Always in God’s Presence

Do not be afraid; I am with you is Gods promise to Israel (Isaiah 40:10), and the first disciples of Jesus were comforted, strengthened and encouraged by his promise to be with them (Matthew 28:20). As Christians, we believe that we are continually in Gods presence not only as spirit but also in each and every person. This living faith is centred on the God-given dignity of each person and calls us to right relationships. Such relationships bring about the justice of Gods reign. Always in Gods Presence is Patrick Jurds second book of reflections and continues to demonstrate his enthusiasm for the gospel of Jesus Christ, first seen in To Strengthen and Encourage. The series of brief reflections is written for parents, teachers, clergy and other educators who want to draw out the best in young people so that they may truly live the gospel. The themes of his reflections are inspired by the Franciscan and Lasallian charisms and cover a variety of topics – discipleship, education, prayer, formation, spirituality, integrity, life choices, building relationships – in ways that are thoughtful, caring, gentle, inspiring, and above all, concerned to remind readers that they are constantly in Gods presence.
